Sailfish are members of the billfish family and can be identified by their distinctive spears, their blue-grey in color and white underbelly. They can grow up to 11ft in length and weigh up to 220 pounds. They are very agile swimmers and sometimes they perform amazing jumps above the water.
Sailfish are the fastest fish in the ocean with recorded speeds of up to 110 km hour.

THE SEARCH
The key part to be able to swim with the sailfish is to find them first! The most common advice a captain will give is just follow the birds. Although the principle seems simple, you will discover there are a tremendous amount of implications for this. Check out our sailfish adventure article to learn more about it.
HIT AND RUN OPERATION
Sailfish usually attack a school of sardines in groups and force the sardines to the surface by encircling them. This movement attracts sea birds that hover over the sailfish and try to get a piece of the bait. This is when we try to approach the group and swim with them. By observing the behavior of the birds, we can determine how much time we have left to swim with them until the hunt is over.
SWIM SHOW
The sail on a sailfish is normally kept folded down while swimming and raised only when the sailfish attacks the sardines. On average, each encounter will last about 30 minutes and totally depends on the size of the bait ball and how fast it is being attacked.
